Knossos was the famous palace of King Minos and the centre of Minoan civilisation. The archaeological site of Knossos is 5 kilometres outside the modern town of Heraklion. The first part of Knossos was discovered in 1878 by the Greek Minos Kalokairinos, who excavated part of the magazines in the west wing and on the facade. He was followed by the British archaeologist Arthur Evans, who began systematic excavations that lasted until 1931, by which time a large part of the palace, the Minoan town, and the cemeteries had been uncovered.
